Garbage & Recycling

Collection

Garbage collection is performed by franchise with Waste Management. Information about current collection rates and the service they provide in our community can be found at the Waste Management link below.

Annual Rate Changes

Each year Waste Management collection rates are raised a small amount in order to keep pace with inflation. This change is based on the Consumer Price index (CPI). The CPI used for the 2017 rate is 1.87%. Two examples of the rate increase are listed below as well as a link to the fees for 2017.

 Example Increase:

Residential 96 Gallon Cart         1.87% increase of $0.29 from $15.46 (2016 rate) to $15.75 (2017 rate)…..

Commercial 4 Yard Dumpster     1.87% increase of $0.70 from $37.30 (2016 rate) to $38.00 (2017 rate)

Disposing of Chemicals and other Hazardous Materials

As a result of the fire at the Benton County Household Hazardous Waste Facility located at the City of Richland's Horn Rapids Landfill on June 27, 2010 most household and business hazardous waste will not be accepted at that facility until further notice. These wastes include paints, waste oil, solvents, antifreeze, pesticides, aerosols, pool chemicals, and cleaners. Mobile collection events for the collection of these materials will be scheduled and published on the Benton County Solid Waste website link below. Please do not place household hazardous wastes in your garbage or recycling container.

For more information on what you need to do to dispose of Hazardous Waste, visit the Benton County – Solid Waste link below, or call the City of Kennewick Public Works Department at 509-585-4419.
