Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR)

Project Description

In coordination with the Department of Ecology, the City partnered in a pilot project which consisted of drilling a deep bed well into the aquifer to be utilized much like a large storage reservoir. During the summer months water is pumped from the large storage reservoir (the aquifer) and during the winter months the same quantity of water, plus 5% more, is injected back into the aquifer to recharge it. The City is currently conducting a fifth year of cycle testing to ensure all Ecology and Department of Health water quality parameters continue to be met. The City recently requested Ecology issue a permanent reservoir permit which would allow for continued permanent operations with the same operating cycles of withdrawal during the summer and recharge during the winter.

Important Dates

Anticipate receiving a permanent reservoir permit before November 1st 2018 or will require receipt of another temporary operating permit for continued use.
